Coloring Pages for the Classroom: Ideas, Printing and Rules
Teachers use coloring pages for quiet time, early finishers, themed lessons and holidays. To print a class set cheaply, use the PDF, print in black and white on ordinary copy paper, and print one test copy first. Every page on Unruffled is free to print for home and classroom use, with no ads and no tracking scripts. Please do not resell the pages or post them on other websites.
Ways to use coloring pages in class
- Early finishers. Keep a folder of pages for students who finish work early.
- Quiet time. A page can help mark a calm part of the day, such as after recess or lunch.
- Themed lessons. Pair a page with a topic. Our dinosaur pages fit a unit on fossils, and winter pages fit a unit on seasons.
- Holidays and events. Christmas pages and other seasonal sets are handy before a break.
- Talking prompts. Ask students to describe their picture, or write a sentence about it.
- Number practice. Color by number gives practice in matching numbers to colors.
Keep it optional where you can. Not every child enjoys coloring, and that is fine.
Choosing pages by grade
Match the detail to the age. Children's hand control varies a lot, even within one class.
- Pre-K: big shapes and thick lines. Try our preschool coloring pages or easy pages.
- Kindergarten and first grade: simple scenes, plus color by number with a few numbers.
- Second grade and up: many students enjoy detailed pages with smaller spaces.
Having two levels of the same theme lets every child join in. A student who finds small spaces hard can take the simpler version without standing out, and a student who wants a challenge can take the detailed one.
Think about supplies too. Chunky crayons suit younger hands. Colored pencils suit detailed pages. Markers are bright but need heavier paper or a spare sheet underneath to protect desks.
Printing a class set cheaply
- Download the PDF in US Letter or A4 to match your school's paper.
- Set scaling to "Fit to page" and print one test copy.
- Print in black and white or grayscale, and use draft quality if your printer offers it.
- If you use a school copier, print one clean copy and photocopy the rest.
- Use ordinary copy paper for crayons and pencils. Save cardstock for marker or paint projects.
Free 10-page packs come as one PDF and need no email, which makes a week of early-finisher pages quick to print. Print a few extra copies of each page for spills, mistakes and new students. For more detail, see how to print coloring pages and the best paper for coloring pages.
Using pages on classroom devices
If your class has tablets or computers, students can color online in the browser with no account. There are no ads on any plan and no tracking scripts. A parental gate sits in front of purchases and links out, to help stop students tapping into them by accident. Younger students can use toddler mode, which is tap-to-fill with 8 big colors.
