Ad-Free Coloring Apps for Kids: What to Check Before You Download

Updated

An ad-free coloring app should show no ads at all, on every plan, not just after you pay. It should also keep purchases and links to other sites behind a parental gate, and be clear about what data it collects. Before you download, check who makes it, how it makes money, what the privacy policy says, and whether you can try it first without signing up.

What "no ads" should mean

"Ad-free" can mean different things. When you read it on an app page, look for these:

  • No ads on any plan. Some apps are only ad-free once you subscribe. The free version may still show ads.
  • No video ads to earn pages or colors. If a child has to watch an ad to get a reward, the app has ads.
  • No ads for other apps. Promotions for the maker's own games are still ads to a child.
  • No tracking for advertising. An app can show no ads and still collect data. Check the privacy details.

In-app purchase traps

Many kids apps are free to download and make money inside the app. Watch for:

  • Big, bright "buy" buttons placed where a child will tap them.
  • Locked pages or colors shown on the first screen, so a child keeps asking.
  • Timers or "limited offer" messages.
  • Free trials that turn into a paid plan unless you cancel.
  • Coins, gems or other made-up money that hide the real price.

Also watch for subscription screens that pop up in the middle of play. A child who is halfway through a picture may tap anything to make the screen go away. A good kids app keeps all of this out of the child's path and puts it behind a parental gate instead.

Most phones and tablets have settings to require a password for purchases. Turning that on is a good backstop, whatever app your child uses.

A checklist before you download

  1. Who makes it? Look for a real company name and a way to contact them.
  2. How does it make money? If you cannot tell, it is probably ads or data.
  3. Read the privacy policy. Look for what is collected, whether it is shared, and whether there are tracking tools.
  4. Check the app store privacy section. It lists data the app says it collects.
  5. Look for a parental gate in front of purchases, settings and links out.
  6. Try it yourself first. Spend five minutes tapping around before handing it over.
  7. Does it need an account? A child should not need one just to color.

If an app fails one of these checks, that does not make it dangerous. It just means you should know what you are handing over. Recheck after big updates too, because apps can change how they make money over time.

How Unruffled handles this

We built Unruffled so parents do not have to check these things every time.

  • There are no ads on any plan, free or paid.
  • There are no tracking scripts.
  • Kids can color online in the browser with no account and no download.
  • Printable pages and PDFs are free, in US Letter and A4. Free 10-page packs need no email.
  • A parental gate covers purchases and links out to other websites.
  • For the youngest children, toddler mode is tap-to-fill with 8 big colors.

You can see what paid plans include on our plans page.

Screens or paper?

Coloring on a screen and coloring on paper are different. On paper, a child holds a crayon, presses and steers it, which uses the hand in ways a tap does not. Screens can be handy in the car or a waiting room. Many families use both.

If you want to print instead, start with our easy coloring pages or toddler pages, and see how to print coloring pages for tips on size and ink. You can also browse our coloring games.

Questions parents ask

Are free coloring apps safe for kids?

Some are and some are not. Free apps often make money from ads or in-app purchases. Check what the app shows before your child uses it, read its privacy policy, and look for a parental gate in front of purchases and links out.

What is a parental gate?

A parental gate is a small check, such as a question a young child is unlikely to answer, that stands in front of things meant for adults, like purchases and links to other websites. It is meant to stop a child from tapping into them by accident.

Does no ads mean no tracking?

Not always. An app can show no ads and still collect data or use tracking tools. Read the privacy policy, and check the app store privacy details, to see what is collected.

Do I need an app to color online?

No. Kids can color online in the browser on our site with no account and no download.
